Whether you’re dealing with a minor sink leakage or a full-blown flooding, water damage is something you should never ignore. Not only does ignoring the problem lead to additional issues, it can also worsen the situation by default and expose your home to a host of health hazards. Few people are educated on the dangers of leaving water damage the way it is for extended periods on time and have to deal with the consequences later on. Acting swiftly now is the best course of action.

Okay, there are three different categories of water. Each category has a different quality of water that will have different effects when you come in contact with it. The higher the number of the category, the worse the quality and its difficulty to deal with.

The first type is called category 1 water. This is the water that comes out of your sink and is commonly referred to as clean water. Water damage with category 1 water usually occurs when your water supply lines are broken.

Category 2 water is called grey water. This water type is filled with chemical ingredients and microorganisms that can make you sick simply by being exposed to it. Category 2 water shows up when your washing machine or toilet breaks.

Category 3 water is the worst of the series, and is also known as black water. If you want to get sick quickly, getting in touch with this type is the best way to do it. This type of water includes sewage, seawater and the water you can find on the ground.

These are the effects of directly coming in contact with the results of unmitigated water damage, but endangering your health indirectly is also a possibility. Water can do all kinds of stuff when in contact with other materials for a while. It’s possible to damage your foundation if it’s based on wood, which can then make the entire house a danger to live in.

The increased moisture in the affected area will allow the growth of mold, which will silently harm the bodies of your relatives unless it’s discovered early. The mold will open up a host of possible ailments and diseases if left untreated, and is capable of doing the most damage. But mold will only grow through neglect. If you make sure that your water problem is dealt with quickly, then you have nothing to fear.

Water damage usually is small and an easy problem to solve if you’re fast. The biggest health hazards exist because of extended exposure to polluted water and not acting quickly enough. This means that you will have to do two things to minimize any harm caused by water damage. Firstly, refrain from coming in contact with the water without protective gear, and definitely do not drink it. Secondly, call someone that is qualified to fix your leak as soon as possible to prevent getting more problems.
